NZ government travel advisory - Samoa

There is high risk to your safety in Samoa and we advise against all tourist and non-essential travel until the situation following the earthquake and tsunami becomes clearer.

A magnitude 8.3 earthquake struck Samoa on 30 September and aftershocks are possible.  A tsunami was generated by the earthquake.  There are reports of deaths and injuries in addition to property damage as a result of the earthquake and tsunami. 

New Zealanders currently in Samoa are advised to follow any advice and instructions issued by the local authorities.  We recommend monitoring local radio for advice, staying away from the sea and moving to higher ground.  Emergency services in Samoa are responding to the disaster.

Faleolo International Airport in Samoa is currently operational.  New Zealanders intending to travel to or from Samoa are advised to contact their travel agent or airline direct to check on flight availability.

New Zealanders currently in Samoa are encouraged to make direct contact with family and friends in New Zealand to allay any concerns as soon as this is possible.

New Zealanders travelling or living in Samoa should have comprehensive medical and travel insurance policies in place that include provision for medical evacuation by air.
