Cross Roads:
I have been asked at work to write a travel Column for a publication we are trying to get up and running which is great as working for an airline there is a never ending run of these kind of things, but it has got me thinking .....
Why infact do we travel, is it just to go somewhere else for a few weeks or is it infact to learn about another part of the world and see maybe how someone else lives ...
I thought, should i write it up like a travel trips kind of thing or just let the words flow and see what one comes up with and I have to admit letting things flow kind of sat with me better.
When I said yes I would do the travel column, I kind of said off the cuff that hey I would go to all the places ..
So if you would like to see your travel stories here, email them through to travel@thebay.net.nz
When I travel I think the main aim for me is to get to really know the place and not just do the tourist thing, i mean one can go to an attraction or a shopping mall or a theme park at alot of places around the world.
Lets find out what it is like to live there, what the locals get up to and hey pick up a few local tips and tricks along the way.
Some of the things ill try and pen here, will have to come from memory but they are still places, locations and people that sit very much in my mind still even years after I have been.
For example in East Vancouver one can find one of the best markets I have ever come across for food and price, you have to trudge your way up away from the main part of the city but this allows you to have a look through historic Gas Town and find some tucked away little treasures like a Chinese Koi pond.
The pond was a place I found myself coming back to during the time I was there, it was really neat to watch them glide below the water and I tell you what, some of the Koi were huge.
Now on the way to the market you do see a rougher side of the city but as long as you keep watchful there is no reason I found to be concerned.
Sunrise Market:
300 POWELL ST, Vancouver:
(604) 685-8019
This market is low cost, good on range and the people are great to talk to and you can find alot of locals end up here rather than the big chain stores to get there fruit and vegies.
Next month, will be more a full ramble of words and images wanted to just introduce the column this time and looking forward to seeing what we come up with.
Joe
Now with publishing some things here on the web site id love to get comments and if you do feel like sending in travel stories please do so... if something comes along that I think might be really good to put into the publication of course i will ask first :)
